No. It's not illegal. But if the cops caught you with a large amount of money, and they ask where it comes from and the answer is... "Iduno" followed by "It's not mine", yeah it can be seized.

I will say an overwhelmingly majority of these bulk cash seizures are the result of other investigative efforts. Most being from a wire tap op either feds or state task force. Others come from CI dishing out the soap. They will have to local cops or highway patrol pull the vehicle over for a traffic violation, known as a pretext stop and do the "Hey you don't mind if we look in the car, which isn't yours, and you have the stupidest reason to visit Florida, with no job?", and what do you know? $76000 stuffed inside the back seat. Cops also have money sniffing dogs or dope K9 can also hit on the cash.

So unless you are running some loads for "Tuco" down in Nogales, or in the money case, going TO Nogales, I think you are OK with the $16 G's. If my some oddball reason the cops find out about the cash, yeah, truck repairs are very expensive. $16K is a reasonable amount of cash for those who don't believe in credit cards. And sorry to say that large of sum is tough to replace if stolen. Cops need PC that the money derives from source of unlawful activity to seize the cash. Most will say they didn't know anything about the cash. May be true, may be all BS. Either way the cash goes. Money in a purpose made concealed compartment is seizable, for now. And the vehicle can be seized for that until someone like me who really would like to have a secret compartment challenges the seizure. It's not out of the question to have one as a good theft deterrent. Administrative seizures are easily challenged although nearly all who had something seized don't.

The $10K is the amount of money, not just cash, one has to reports entering or leaving the US. My wife's parents sold a house in TJ. My MIL split the cash up and gave $12K ea to the kids. She had to report it at he border. 2 years later IRS sent us a letter after that years tax telling us we had to report that income. I call the IRS and informed them that MIL paid taxes in Mexico for that money. IRS didn't pursue. But never mind that we were audited the following tax year.

Sucks to be in your position.

I get paid to sit while waiting for repairs. But I prefer to fix what I can and get the load moved as opposed to staying out with a busted trailer instead of getting home that night.

One of our drivers told me, "I don't get paid to fix my truck." He was referring to a headlight out! I carry two spares at all times, it takes me 4 minutes to change a bulb. No ticket, no worries running with a headlight out, no low vision issues limping to the TA that will burn 3 hours of your life to change a bulb and charge you or your company $82 for that service.

The question is.... Do they know what to do with 550 cord and will they remember it's a survival tool. Not a pretty braclet.

Oh, well, I get paid by the hour you see. Plus my company doesn't allow drivers to work on the truck for liability reasons. So I'll just go by their book and wait for repair. Also if I'd end up being out of hours they'd send a replacement driver so I could get home every night. But I've never had to do that.
