1st, I'd like to thank you for your service.
As a truck driver my whole life, I deeply regret not going into the mechanics trade, heck, when I had my own trucks, I did it anyway. I can appreciate your passion to drive, but I'm telling you, like Chinatown sez, there is a HUGE call for mechanics, of ANY kind. You do truck driving, you'll start at the bottom, finish that mechanic's school, you could probably pick your job and start at top pay, and have a life, to boot. You want to drive a truck, get a dually pickup, but the future is in repair, not driving. Good luck.
Dino soar, Rideandrepair and The Gels Thank this. -
Oh m, trust me. Mechanics will always have business. 5 years ago heck even 1 year ago I never thoigh I'd be looking at mechanic school. I still want to drive though. I want to be so intimate with that truck. I can take her apart Put her together.... like my rifle. Her name is Cheyenne.Rideandrepair and 201 Thank this.

Ok, your decision. Not to paint a glum picture, but trucking is in for some rough times. As much as it's deteriorated just since I've retired ( 2006) it's going to get a lot worse before it gets better, if ever. Like I say, for a while, you won't make half of what a mechanic makes, and you'll be stuck in some God forsaken truck stop over Christmas,,,or whatever. Unless, of course, you do a local gig, but just out of school, you may not have that choice. Those jobs don't come up often, and are usually grabbed from within.OldeSkool, The Gels and Rideandrepair Thank this.

Heh, are you basically saying be a mechanic instead of a driver? I guess I have it as a fall back. The romance of that road is another thing though. According to UTI I'll be one year short of being ASE certified, so I can always do that I guess. They make good money too...... Nah..... I wanna drive! I'm young yet though. I have time to do both.
And again, I'm only doing this because my work history is literal garbage. -
Darn right I'm saying that, romance of the road went out in the 90's with all the reg's. Get the mechanic thing, and drive later if you want, but it's been my experience, personal experience, once you start trucking, it's pretty hard to do anything else.
-
Well that sucks. As a young(ish) idiot, I'm going to disregard most of your advice though. You know how it is!
-
HA! I didn't listen, why should you. Good luck, whatever you do. I'm not saying trucking is a death sentence, I did ok, it's just, trucking usually favors people that have no other skills, and for many, it's the only game in town. I'm saying, if you possess the skill to do something else, you're head and shoulders above the rest. You'll come across some real winners driving a truck, more so today. Just be ready for that.

I got hired on with CFI from Joplin MO with very little verifiable experience. When you go to their orientation if you need some more experience they take you to the college to do some retraining. Then may have to go out with a trainer for a week or two. One of the best companies I have ever worked for. Not sure how they are now but worth a look. The Gels Thanks this.

Wow....I know drivers that have doctorates and just do driving because it is less stressful and don't cost a small fortune for their training and liability insurance. Not all drivers are morons. All occupations have their own morons in them. Please don't generalize drivers in the same group. Personally I started driving after loosing 5 family members in 2 years. It gave me time to think and clear my head. Rather enjoy not being micromanaged with a boss looking over my shoulder while I do a job. It's all in the perspective of the driver why we do this job.The Gels Thanks this.
