Well I thank you for your service. I think the military people, all the people on this site, all of the military are Heroes. It's just something I think should be said. And more should be done for our veterans.
I don't think that you're plan is good or bad. But the question it raises in my mind is that you want to go to diesel mechanic school because of your work history. That's the part of it that doesn't jive. I don't think that in and of itself should be the reason.
There are arguments for either thing. You can earn a living in trucking, but if you are young you do need something at least as a backup because if a driver say is medically disqualified for some reason, he's not really qualified to do much else.
On the other hand, a lot of guys that are mechanics have problems when they get older because it's harder for them to crawl around the trucks and crawl under them and climb up onto them and all of that kind of thing. I have a buddy of mine that just shut his shop down because he just couldn't physically do it anymore.
As far as being an owner operator, I think most of the guys on here will tell you that when you have your own truck you tend to learn at least somewhat to be a mechanic. And a lot of what you need to know as an owner operator, now with the internet you can pretty much watch YouTube and learn about anything that you need to.
And mostly the stuff that you'd be doing are brakes tires shocks exhaust changing a turbo radiator water pump, belts, hoses stuff like that. It doesn't really require you to actually go through full-fledged schooling for that.
Unless you were planning on rebuilding transmissions and engines and Rears, but if you are mechanically inclined you can still learn how to do that without schooling. But at that point you probably need a garage and space and that's a whole other situation.
Here's something for you to think about. Maybe you go to school to be a mechanic and get a job and learn wrenching.
Then save your money and buy yourself the coolest old truck that you can find. Then pick your favorite mechanical engine rebuild it paint the truck, go over all mechanical aspects of it make it Sharp and if you want to be an owner operator if it's paid for and you have money in the bank you'll be way ahead of most people.
That would be a lot more fun than going to some bottom-feeder company, being gone for months at a time sharing a mattress with some fat slob trainer that stinks like rotting arse, while you are being paid slave wages.
Hey I don't know if anyone remembers it but a while back there was a crazy post about this girl that went out with this giant fat Trainor and I can't even remember what he did but it was the most disgusting thing I've ever heard whatever it was.
Wasn't he crapping in the truck while she was driving or something?
Anyway good luck buddy.
What yall think
