OK everyone I’m back again, I recently received a rebuild bid for my 79NTC 350 SC it was almost $23,000. That’s not an option and I’m still looking at other bids. My question is I can buy used warrantied engines for around five Grand I would like to put the same year motor as my truck, 84 and a Cummins But not set in stone on that. Please advise your thoughts thank you in advance.
What year Cummins should I look for?

Warranty on a used engine…..that’s funny.
What makes you think 23k is expensive for an overhaul? Have you priced the parts needed? Have you seen shop labor prices lately?AModelCat and broke down plumber Thank this. -
You might get 30 days ot until you leave the premises which ever comes first .

30 DAY GUARANTEE ON THE BLOCK AND THE CRANK. NO CORE EXCHANGE NEEDEDBinderdavemays1 and Diesel Dave Thank this. -
$23k is not bad at all for a complete rebuild IMO.
I built a CAT short block a few years ago and lets just say I was not far off 5 figures between parts and block machining alone.Diesel Dave Thanks this. -

That says 30 days on the block and crank. Now that is block and crank only. If it needs a jug, a head and or even never lights as long as the crank isn’t broke and the block will sorta hold a head the rest is yours.
I understand better than anyone money doesn’t grow on trees. And if it did hell I couldn’t even get a money shrub to take root. Fix this thing once and be done. You can get 10 times more in it trying to get by for less. I don’t mean that in a 23k is a deal on an overhaul sense. I mean it is very much so if the person doing it knows what’s happening. I’ve seen 40k junk overhauls cause the guy that worked for the very reputable shop didn’t give a ####. You gotta do some leg work here, and even then it’s a gambleD.Tibbitt, AModelCat and Binderdavemays1 Thank this. -
I have a year to save for this so hopefully I’ll find a good used one for around $5000
Thanks for the advice Iwore out Thanks this. -
A used engine warranty will likely be only to include a similar replacement of the same exact used item. You have to factor in the wrench time to install said engine. If you have to replace it again 2 weeks after you put it in, you’re not gonna be happy camper. Guaranteed the warranty doesn’t include any labor.
My point is 23k is not a lot of money for rebuilding an engine. And with a 40 plus year old engine there can’t be a huge selection of quality used engines out there. The ones that are out there have likely been setting……. for a long time.Diesel Dave Thanks this.
