I do o.k. using loadboards for the majority of my loads. I haul reefer freight, so that is what I will explain. I try to average around $1.80/mile on all miles. Average being the key word! Freight coming out of the Northeast is $.90 to $1.60/mile, Freight going into the Northeast should pay at least $2/mile. Low paying outbound miles should be minimized and should take you into a higher paying lane such as the midwest. Regional freight volume makes a lot of difference and is expressed as a ratio of inbound/outbound freight. The higher the number the harder it is/cheaper rate to get out of. It basically boils down to the law of supply and demand. Florida is usually a bad place to be empty. All of the money is made going inbound, plus enough money to deadhead to Atlanta is necessary. When the orange crop, or watermelon is being harvested Florida is not a bad place to load because the I/O ratio is less than or equal to 1. No matter what you should have your wife work the load board/phone so you can concentrate on trucking. Sometimes it takes 20-30 phone calls to get an acceptable rate. If you have more questions please feel free to ask. I worked very hard to learn this much and dont mind helping someone who is willing to learn.
