And what do you mean by small? Is Roehl small? Or are you talking about 5 trucks?

A small carrier will probably be more efficient with your time than a mega TL carrier.

Roehl is not a small carrier. You will have to really look HARD for a small carrier that will hire a newbie but I can virtually guarantee you that you will be treated better than with ANY of the mega coolie carriers.

I had 14 pre-hires before i left school, and actually went as far as weed them down to 3 I would like to work for.

then, I scheduled orientations with each, each one spaced a week apart. i did this after hearing all of the stories about how people go to oreintations and then get sent home.......so that just inn case something happened at one and I got sent home, i had something lined up ready to go for the next week and wouldn't have to start the process all over again.

fortunately, the first company i picked turned out to be great and i didn't have to implement the rest of that plan......

but, after i made it through orientation with the first company (which i'm still with) I did call the other two companies and respectfully declined their offer of orientation just in case i might need them at some point in the future.

nothing wrong with leaving yourself some options and and out if you need it.

Biggest problem your going to run into with the small companies, is their insurance. Most will require 2 years experience before they'll hire you. All of the big companies that train, are self insured. Hmmmm, maybe I should say most of them.

I work for a small carrier. 50 trks. If the trks are running, your making money and so are they and they do so want to make money!!! (so do I)

You will probably get pre-hires from every company you send an app to! So its in your hands. Make a list of your wants and needs and find one that best matches those.

Include your goals too. Ask yourself where is this job going to lead me to. The more planning you do now the better off you'll be. No one can fault you for going to a better job. If they do then they were not the best pick anyway. However, just do not relay on pre-hire letters. Chompi's right, those are handed out more than you would think and all they really are is a recruiting move.

    chompi Thanks this.

Yep, they won't hesitate to yank a few out of class at a moments notice. Some will even be pulled out of the truck and sent walking. It's a dog eat dog business when it comes to students.

Do your homework and pick the best one. We'll help the best we can.
The thought you asking what's proper, I know you'll do well. That's getting to be a rare quality.

Actually compared to some of the other bottom feeders, Roehl is not a bad choice. Most of them companies have one purpose. You get your training and experience and they get cheap labor.

In a year you'll be calling the shots and most likely will be changing companies.
