We had a thing that fit on the hitch of a truck or tractor...basically a really big home-built toilet paper spool...just drop a bolt through the hole and tighten it up. Being the third son I rarely got the glory job of driving though, instead I was the one stuck with the dirty work. Maybe that's why I enjoy driving so much.

I do love picket-pounders though. When we leased the farm out I spent a couple weeks helping the guy leasing it (a friend/neighbour) get it ready for cattle, since Grandpa had been doing nothing but grain in his 20-year semi-retirement. I loved the picket pounder/tractor set-up the guy has...self-levelling pounder and a GPS on the tractor. Basically pounding the pickets consists of pushing buttons and smoking cigarettes. He also had a spooler with a hydraulic tensioner for stringing wire. He cleared bush with a Cat instead of working through it, and just went around the sloughs, so there was no dealing with water. I also got regular beer breaks, since I was working for free on my vacation. A far cry from fencing for our own cattle.
