I own a 2004 Western Star. I am trying to go out west and have started having problems. I can't go faster than 55mph without losing power, temperature going up (mine as well as the truck!), check engine light coming on, and white turning to black smoke billowing out. I'm also getting only 4.1 mpg. I had a fuel filter changed and that did nothing. I'm now sitting at a Freightliner dealership waiting until morning to see what they find wrong with it. I'd like a heads up if possible. Does this sound like an injector or maybe even turbo to you? It seems to run OK on flat land.
