It was a broad question I agree. I'm not an O/O but would like to one day.. Just need to get a better understanding that's all. I will be either step, flat or RGN when I do it. Even this has it's own set of variables.

    Thats a fair answer!
It depends on what your fixed-costs are I think.
Yours are alot higher than mine as I don't have drivers, or more trucks/trailers than I can drive at 1 time anymore, & my mess is paid for. My "fixed costs" are about $300.00 a month. Anything after fuel, IFTA, IRP, etc. & maint. is wages.
My "truck account" is healthy so surviving a major breakdown on my own is assured.

At this time I can't imagine how any of ya with a big nut-to-crack each month are doing it. My hats off to ya!

Yeah. 3 trucks, 8 trailers and enough outbound within a 250 to 500 mile radius that I can run one or two trucks home empty to reload again. If I start adding back hauls that tie up my equipment, then those back hauls had better pay well because if I get too many of those back hauls next thing you know I'm buying more equipment and looking for more drivers. And for what.....lower quality drivers, lower quality service, slimmer margins. I try to stay big enough to service my little corner of the world but small enough so that I can cherry pick my back hauls and keep my margins up.

Yea you got a point there rates out of valley have really gone to hell in the past couple weeks. M&M wants freight moved for 1.25/mile and dont wanna pay a dime for stops. Called 5 brokers all the same rate all going to ks all two stops and every last broker was mad as hell at M&M for driving the rate down this much. Was $900 for the same run 2 months ago

Gotta look in the right places. Present load is close to 4 bucks and weighs about 10,000. Legal dims, 571 miles, tarped. I will admit, I don't get that all the time, but most of it. UT to NC was only $2.21 on 8,000 pounds.
