Don't, I repeat, DON'T scrimp on bearings. While tempting in these financially troubled times, that Chinese crap will leave you stranded, and most of the stuff today is imported. USA, USA,,,if you can find them, AND afford them. You get what you pay for,,,

I decided to run with original bearings for now. Thanks for your input.

does anyone know how to back off slacks on an adjuster like this? I managed to get the drum off but now I can’t get the drum over the new shoes. I tried releasing the brakes and no luck.

While I was really strong with James opinion mine has changed a bit. Metal flaking off and damaging the differential is a good point but I thank his trailer is safe. I miss things in posts as well.
There are military specs on many things like this. The spec on bearings is probably like oil. Delo, Rotella, Mobile etc. As long as it meets that spec it can all be mixed up and life is good. That is what the military spec means.
About 15 or 20 years ago I came into work. It was day light but the sun was not up. There was a high dollar horse trailer parked off to one side of the driveway. It had a bare spindle on one axle. It was purpleish blue. I thank that is about 6 or 700 degrees. I knew who it belonged to and they were headed to the quarter horse congress show. This trailer was less than a year old. It had multiple different brands of bearings and races in the one hub. Told the owner they are all supposed to be interchangeable but I don't like that. Wish they were all Timkin or Bower. All the same brand and USA companies. He said change them all. I called my favorite supplier and told them what I wanted. They ordered them and sent them to me. All the same brand in the same colored boxes. Some were made in USA, China and several other countries.
Still a bit speechless about that deal and feel lucky just to find anything these days.

Good call on greasing the slacks. This trailer is new to me. Its my first end dump and just installed my PTO. This was my second load in the trailer when that axle seal started leaking all over the place.

I'm always a little worried running a new trailer that I'm not sure if theres an issue I haven't found. I know these end dumps get abused. I had a guy that wanted a couple loads of road base. Sure enough the crushing plant broke down so I had to delay the job until the plant was back up. Then the guy says he wants 15 loads now. (Each load takes about 4 hours round trip). Sure enough my axle seal is leaking all over by the second load.

I would normally take my trailer to the shop but everyone around here is 2+ weeks out. So I get to learn to do the work myself. Its all back together now. Put in the old bearings and another seal. New set of brake shoes because they got soaked in oil. I'm going to do the shoes on my other wheel tomorrow morning and grease the trailer. Should be good to get back to work but now its going to rain for the next 4 days.

Those are manual adjust slacks. I'm not certain of your terrain and work. But physically adjusting them once a week is a must.

I mixed new brands. I'm not a fan, but never seen a failure. I dont even inspect a bearing till after I inspect a race. If the race is worn, it gets a bearing.

Now if your really a stickler, Timken used to offer "matched set". Race and bearing in closer tolerance than standard oem tolerance.

Not sure if they still do.

spsauerland, AModelCat and OldRed98 Thank this.

Thanks for pointing that out. I'll make sure to adjust them tomorrow. I'm used to auto slacks. I do dump work. Good thing is that its local but the bad is that every load is really heavy.

    jamespmack Thanks this.
