I hate driving a governed truck. Our old White GMCs from the 1980s would run about 85mph before they finally governed them a few years ago.

Its pretty sad now that I can run 69mph and hardly ever get passed. Usually only owner operators pass me. Seems like nobody runs above 65 anymore.

u would think drivers that are paid by hour like ltl companies....ups con-way abf southeastern etc. would have some of the fastest trucks....not slowest like abf and conway...

if i was making 25-$30 an hour i wouldnt care if truck only ran 40

Most LTL companies pay their linehaul drivers mileage pay. 99% of the time, if you see one of our guys pulling doubles, he is being paid mileage. But when we arent driving, we are being paid hourly. For example, I go to work, clock in, and am immediately being paid my hourly wage. I get my bills, my key, fuel my tractor, hook my set, pre trip etc, still being paid hourly. Then I depart myself, hop in my truck and leave, and that is when mileage pay starts, no more hourly. When I get to wherever Im going, I go inside, arrive myself, and I am back on hourly pay until I leave again.

Basically, we are paid for all time in service to the company, which is the way I think it should be, and the one credit I will give to the union...Im not saying that some non union carriers arent paid for all time too...But most union carriers are paid for ALL time.

Ah the good ole days, had a GMC conventional with a 903 Cummins with a 13 speed. Factory settings for that motor was 2900 our boss had them cut to 2700 rpm! Remember the day I got to our Canadian terminal and manager told me I was late for a pickup in Buffalo, so off I go hammer down (young and stupid) wound her out and just split into 13th gear on the QEW and there stands a cop waving his hands for me to pull over. He says, in a hurry? I say was I going to fast? Yea we got you with the airplane,,,,,,,,,,,120 mph. Funny part was fine was only 23 dollars and I wasn't even wound out yet:biggrin_25524:

old thread, but a nagging question regarding governed trucks

when you originally had a 75mph truck and could run 800mi/11hr shift, and the company put you into a 62mph truck where you can only do 500-600mi/11hr shift, was anyone ever compensated for the lost wages?

Keep in mind that before deregulation under Carter, most OTR was fleet. O/O's were uncommon. Fleets governed down trucks during the early 70's when fuel climbed from 0.15 per gallon to the unheard of 0.45!
My (company) Freightliner had a mechanical governor added in '75. That was my first governed truck. Of course the speed limit was 55, so that's about where they tried to govern trucks.
Try pulling doubles or triples up a pass with a 250hp governed truck! But they made up for it. By 1980, I had my first truck with AC.

Wow. My truck is only governed on the engine rpm's (2100 rpm) which would put me around 130 mph in the top hole. Not really sure, only because the truck has never been in the top gear once. In 16th at 1500 rpm I am turning 67. I have only had it up to 85 at the most, and that wa still in 17th. But I am practical. I run around 62 and keep more of my money.
