Nope, he had a kind heart. More than the steering wheel holder deserved.

In my search for a company to sign on with I am finding a lot of companies that actually give the driver the route to take from the shipper to the receiver. What roads to take, where to stop and fuel, etc. What happened to us being the truck drivers? That has become a question for me when I call a company looking for a job. "Does the company route me or am I able to do what I am paid for?"

Technology is great. I was recently on a vacation trip with a friend who had one in the car. But it is not something I would rely on to do my job. Give me an address and a phone number and a time to be there and I will. I wonder how many drivers even know how to read addresses anymore? As in what address corresponds to what city block, etc. I would say very few.

I bet he was driving along down the nice two lane parkway thinking "man, this sure is a well maintained road and I haven't seen another truck yet. I will probably make good time at this rate." He also had a bunch of bungee cords for trap securement stretched across his dot bumper completely covering his trailer license plate. I didn't write him a ticket because a man who is too busy to plan a trip doesn't have time to pay a ticket, let alone address the envelope and mail it.

You should have written for all violations, federal and state. Disgressionary power should not go that far.

GPS is good to tell you how much time you have to reach your destination rather than direction. I agree with some of the previous post, what happened to actually taking the time to look at a map to even see what the GPS is telling you. Come on, If I listen to my GPS I be going to my neighbors house about 1/4 mile away from where I actually live. "You have reached your destination" something wrong here~!

I've got GPS in my truck. But i also jot down the fuel route in marker on my windshield up in the corner. I also jot down directions to the shipper and the final destination in my notebook...each page has one load of information...addresses, phone numbers, dates of pick up and drop.

The main reason I have GPS, is so i know what the next dang street is. It is hard enough to be in heavy traffic, try to pay attention to the 4 corners of your truck...all the while keeping an eye out for traffic signals, any truck warning signs, AND looking at all 4 corners of the intersection for a street sign....seeing how every city in the US puts them all in the exact same place....i know it should be easy. ;-)

I do not follow GPS 100%, but it is a tool. Just like your Rand McNally. Just like your cell phone. And every tool has the right time and place for its use.

If i ever have a question as to my route, whether it comes from my qualcomm or the GPS, i will double check it with the 'low clearance' portion of the Motor Carriers Atlas.

That's right. We carried lots of dimes and later quarters for the pay telephone. There's another one I didn't mention earlier although with cell phone there is an advantage.

Bingo, that's mainly what I use mine for too... so I don't have to drive along at 3mph looking at the street signs for my turn. That is, if the street signs haven't been stolen by punks.

I also use it for trip planning, to calculate mileages and maximize my driving time. I can tell you just about down to the minute when I will arrive at a certain point.

There are many times it'll tell me to turn down a skinny dirt road, or point me through a residential neighborhood. Am I gonna accept that as the gospel? Of course not! You need to have common sense.

Those who cannot plan a trip using a map, should not have a GPS.

I'm sure that he thinks you make a hell of a lot more than you do. Oh yeah, he also probably thinks that all you do is sit on your a-- behind the steering wheel all day, and occasionally harass truck drivers.:biggrin_25512:

    Kilo Papa Echo 0245 here. . .:biggrin_25519:

    Yep.

How do you know he was lying about that? It is kind of hard to see signs when you are driving H.U.A.

It's all about money. The company has determined the route because they either know, (or think they know,) it will save them money.

Right on. Just another tool helping you out. There is nothing wrong with using a GPS. Just don't depend on it as your ONLY source of "gettin' from here to there!"

When I was driving to somewhere I had fun in my unmarked car with the exception of the license plate (G12-27819). I had a portable radar unit but hardly ever used it. When I was passing a bunch of speeding trucks and there was nobody around but the trucks, I'd hold the unit on the floor, pull the trigger, and watch all the brake lights.
