My hubby's is getting a bit thin on top, but that is genetic.
Back to your other topic, one thing for hubby to keep in mind when talking to other companies is how many miles they say their drivers are averaging weekly. If they say 3,000 or 3,500, I'd think twice. If they mention 2,500 or something along those lines, it may be more accurate considering the shape of the industry right now. -
Least amount of miles for the most amount of dollars. That is my problem right now with Schneider, being totally honest here... Plenty of freight, but 3 to 5 days to get there... Legally I could do most of these runs in 1 to 2 days. That is money out of my pocket. The freight pays good, but if you can only get one or two runs in a week, what good is it?
Going to drag the flat bed back out and try it again. God this sucks!
Mikebillsgirl Thanks this. -
I'd be even more nervous about that flatbed. It's dog eat dog right now among the flatbedders.
And there are some mighty big dogs being eaten alive right now. -
I know, I have a guy up here in my neck of the woods that I have worked for in the past. I know some guys over there, I sent a buddy there a few months ago. He did $4700 last week. I did $800.
I was waiting to see what happened as I made my moves. I think I will take him up on his offer. As my "safe" moves are not paying off. Hell, my equipment is paid for, and what the heck does it matter if I go broke with him or Schneider?
Here is the rig, like I said, all is paid for. My mainstay was expedite, the load you see below paid $5+ a mile from Janesville WI to Sharonville OH (Cinci). Hopefully things are picking up, my buddy thinks so, as does the guy I would be leasing on to. Keeping my fingers, toes and testicles crossed!

I was lucky enough to get into trucking thru a company provided school, when hiring new drivers was on the downward slide. Some who have went thru school after me, have the CDL but cannot find a job.
As far as the 'facts' you here on here, dont forget, this is the internet. I could tell you, i'm a newbie, in 10 weeks, making $0.48cpm, getting 2600miles a week, and i'm home for 2 days every 8 days out. I can also tell you i own my own airplane, own the Lakers and a $80,000 car for every day of the week. Oh did i tell you i look exactly like Tom Cruise...except i'm 6'5", 220lbs and i'm black. LOL....
I somewhat have my hands tied....as i signed a 'contract' to repay my schooling. as long as i make it thru till 01/10, i am free to go. heck i am free to go now, except i'd have to repay almost $3,000 thats left on my tuition.
Any potential employer will look at your work history. If they see a pattern of working 6 months somewhere, and getting another job, and you only last there 6 months, then get another job.....see where that is going?? it dont look good. put a year in...then move. that will look a little better than 6 mo. here and there. As bad as i think it SUCKS right now, i dont have rent or any utilities to pay on. Just trying my best to knock off some debt i owe. And if i get home for a couple days every other week, i am happy. I have a dog that i miss like if she was my own child, and hope sooner or later, i can sneak her on my truck (or when i go O/O, i'm bringing her no matter what), but i know she is in good hands.
remember, it all comes down to one thing...............
ATTITUDE.Panhandle flash Thanks this. -
Attitude is important. But it has never in my lifetime of near 20 years of driving a stinking truck, been this bad out here. This ain't good, and honestly, I am scared. And my sh-t is paid for! Thank God I have a low debt ceiling, but still more than most. I could run for a week or two and take a few off and have the bills paid. Right now, it is feast and famine. Good for you, and may you have a bountiful year.
The rest of us will see.

You have all given us some good information here. I just talked to hubby and told him some of the thoughts posted. I think he wants to stay put deep down inside. He is with a starter comapny and it's not the greatest but all companies starter or not have problems. We have both been around the block enough at our age to accept that.
Like Waterloo he is scared. I can hear it in his voice. 2008 was a TOUGH year for us with the unexpected need to change careers, a child starting to college and all the "Murphy's Law" things that seem to have fallen into place.
When he first got out there he was making better money than now and he was feeling some relief and feeling much better about himself. Last week his check was barely $300. That I think is what has him the most frustrated. He doesn't feel like he has any other options at this point and supporting his family is a priority for him.
The good news is he REALLY LIKES trucking more than he ever expected to. He actually loves it. So to get to the kind of job he wants to end up with he probably does need to stay put. And that is what I just told him.
All we can do is breath. Take it one day at a time and send up a few prayers that things start to change for the better for the whole industry as well as the country. -
Averitt has a terminal very close to us and he has looked at them. But he talked to a driver at a Loves or Pilot one last week and the miles story was no better. They get home every weekend which he liked but at this point any change would have to be financially related and nothing more.
We've also got Milan Express in our area. He has not been able to find out much about them so far.
