That's a DOT cop. Part of his inspection has to do with your low air warning buzzer, and the whether or not the air brake knob pops out when the air pressure gets low. He has to look into your cab.
cop comes behind me and hits the blues, I will hit the hazards to let him know that I see him. Drop speed, take next exit if close by, or pull as far off the road as possible. Roll down the windows, kill the engine and wait, one hand on the steeringwheel, the other on the door. Standard procedure. -
Being an ex-Military Police and having a few friends become Police Officers your taught that this is the highest percentage chance of an
armed encounter believe it or not! So they already have the adrenaline pumping. Truckers aren't notorious for shooting at LEO's
but you can thank the 4 wheelers for keeping them on red alert. So my 2 cents just keep hands on steering wheel
until they ask for paperwork don't be fumbling around inside the cab. There are Barney Fife's but most just want to do their jobs
and go home to the wife and kids. Just sayin'. -
They are now teaching to have both hands on the top of the steering wheel where they can see them. -
I got pulled recently in my 4 wheeler, I was speeding and I knew it. I passed him going the opposite direction and saw his brake lights come on, I pulled into a gas station before he even got turned around and waited for him. Once he got to my window I already had my license and registration in my hand. He asked me if I knew how fast I was going. I said about 52, speed limit was 45, he said I got you at 54. He walked back to his car and ran my information came back and handed me my paperwork and said slow down and have a nice day.
Point of that is I knew I was wrong, I was polite, did not make him chase me down, and he let me go because of it. Your attitude and actions will determine how an encounter will turn out. Best advice I can give is to just be polite, they deal with enough attitudes everyday and if your not a jerk, they will be more inclined to help you out.JAL1972 Thanks this. -
In Ca. they like to open your door (if it's unlocked) passenger side. It seems in the south, cops approach drivers in the travel lane and stand there getting missed by inches by passing vehicles. Can never figure that out. I prefer to get out and meet him face to face. Feels more even keel to me, although most cops want you to stay inside.

Dinomite, postmandav, Mr Ed and 1 other person Thank this. -
When i was pulled over for the first time the officer came up on the passenger side step and asked if he could open my passenger side door. I told him that ''I respect your position & authority and do not wish to be rude, but i do not consent to any search of my vehicle, self or personal belongings. However if you do insist on such i will not resist you.''
It turned out he just wanted to be able to talk to me more comftorably without hanging on the side of my truck. Once he explained that i told him he could open the door, but he would not because it would have been illegal due to my earlier statement i guess?
Ended up letting me off with a warning ticket after we had a more amicable chat from that point on.
