You mean like this ISX cam? Yes, that was my cam, the first time I asked for an overhead on my ISX. I did a lot of things wrong buying my truck. It's cost me. Don't be me.
That's exactly what my mechanic told me. It's why he wanted me to drop a D60 in from the beginning, but I didn't have the financial resources to justify that at the time. At least now I don't have an oil slick under my truck after idling all night. There's that. But I am looking to my next truck, which won't feature a Cummins. Edited to add: both the injector and exhaust cams looked like that on my first overhead. In addition the Jake assembly was also mince meat. Metal shavings everywhere. All we're replaced. It was expensive. This is why I think NOT doing a regular overhead is insane. You have got to see what is going on.
And this is why I have the utmost respect for you @Lepton1 You never crow, always help and point out mistakes you have made to help other drivers. We need more like you. On the subject of that camshaft...#####, that's rough man.
Ok, you've piqued my interest here. From what source did you ever pick up this notion? I've heard some doozies in my day but that one is way up high on the list. I mean I just facepalmed a concussion here.
Not nearly as rough as the engine was... I almost started a thread of my foray into being an owner operator, but was ashamed of myself for not doing the basics, like getting a dyno before buying. I had driven the truck a few months before making the purchase on a team run. It purred like a kitten. I still should have done a Dyno.
I didn't do a dyno either. Hope it doesn't come back to bite me. I've always had good luck with high mileage Detroit's, although this is my first high mileage DD15. I just do regular maintenance & also I do the maintenance on the emissions so hopefully I won't have any issues.
I think that thread, done by someone like you, would be invaluable. To many "incomplete" o/o threads out there. Why "incomplete"? Well, hell, some of these guys have never made a mistake. I suspect they think they're actually walking on water, when in reality it's just a rain slick parking lot. Just my two cents there...
I bought my truck, a high mileage N14 knowing that eventually I will be doing an in-frame. That's also why I haven't been surprised by having to replace the clutch, A/C system, brakes, and oil pan gasket. With all of that done it runs like a top with nearly 1.2 on the clock. I will be buying it a big Christmas gift this year, a complete in-frame. The gift that keeps on giving.
