I recently bought a 07 565 isx from an original owner. the truck has 1million km and 16,000 engine hours. The oil sample comes back clean. was wondering what a guy should do. the head gasket isn't leaking or anything yet but was wondering if maybe a person should spend the money maybe doing the bottom end bearing or wait and do a overhaul. up here a inframe at peterbilt with reman head is 22,000 but some friends tell me underhaul might save putting a rod through the side. Just wondering what i should do or am i wasting my money.. What kind of mileage is a guy seeing before overhaul or anything. Thanks

Nothing wrong with rolling in some rods and mains cheap insurance and piece of mind for you.if you get in there and find the bearings to be in really good shape you can always leave them.i also wouldent run extended oil change intervals without running oil samples especially on an egr motor.my current company is running between 25000-30000 on regular oil and from what I see it cuts the engine life in half on the egr motors pistons just get completly covererd in hard carbon and soot and score the liners.just my .02

The bearings are usually worse towards the center of the block since anything in the oil will hit this area first. Pull the pan and pull a couple of mains/rods in the center and see how they look, you might be amazed how good they look! Bearings can certainly exceed a million km no problem.

thanks heavyd and truckmechanic. i might just do that. i know the peterbilt shop quoted me 2700 and that is installing a new oil pump but i might run it for a couple months till get more cash and maybe inframe. what have you guys seen more inframes or just pull engine and put crate motor in.

Depends on the wear on the engine and also what your wanting to spend I belive if its got over a million its worth pulling out and having the block line bored and the crank polished.you can have the deck cut change all the hoses and mounts fearsome everything. but there is nothing wrong with an inframe as long as everything checks out ok.the cost of a crate motor is Probly close to an out of frame but a lot quicker to install

Everyone has a different opinion. I think with only a million kms the engine has a way to go before any major overhaul work is needed. Keep doing your oil samples, when any significant bear wear starts to show, the samples will tell you. There is nothing wrong with spending some money either for a little preventative maintenance and some peace of mind. If I had the money I would replace the engine entirely. Replacement vs overhaul is really two different and separate stories and almost impossible to compare to each other. Overhaul is a variable term. Engines can be overhauled at almost any possible depth you wish. Some guys get their engine overhauled, but only really installed new pistons/liners and bearings. Other guys get a new head, others may install new injectors too, or a water pump, and a turbo, egr cooler and so on. Replacement engines will always cost a lot more vs a rebuild, but with a replacement your getting so much more it is worth the money. Every single gasket and seal is new. Every single bushing and bearing is new. Reman water pump, reman injectors, complete new engine wiring harness and all new sensors, the list goes on and on. How many regular overhauls include a new rear main seal or front timing gear bushings or a new air compressor? All these great parts do add up making replacing an engine expensive, but I think if you want a completely refreshed engine with a great warranty, it is the only way to go. When you replace an engine it is also a great time to take advantage of other parts such as your clutch or engine mounts. Since the engine is out, you can have these parts installed basically labor free! We have done this for a few customers with engines with well over two million km on them! These engines were pretty well wooped and leaking oil from every joint possible! They have been very happy with having new engines installed instead!
