I always just signed my logs after midnight/when I woke up for the previous day. When I was with Werner the rule was to send a certain macro which had the inspection report at the last duty status change of the day/shift or as soon as feasible after midnight.

This signature thing I think can be a bit murky. Since we all know everybody in here runs legal (grin grin wink wink) I think any hypothetical situation is just that. I am not an attorney but I suspect somewhere in the law or legal precedent there is some form of implied certification when you put a CMV on the nations roads. If I am correct even if you have not signed that log if its false you might have some explaining to do. In my years of driving I always used paper logs so I don't know how the e-logs work. I imagine there is someplace there to certify.

You must sign your pre trip inspection as soon as you have done it, driving logs at the end of the day.

Only sign the sheets you keep!
7-UP, Mattflat362, burnsey and 2 others Thank this. -
It really depends on the carrier if you're a company driver. At one company I was taught to sign it at the beginning of my day, at another I was taught to sign it at the end of the day. I would actually say at the beginning only because your logging has started, you did your pretrip, added all your information in, so if you were stopped, would the DOT officer think it was incomplete because it wasn't signed? Just a thought...

By signing, you agree that anything that the DOT added to your log while it was in their hands is 100% accurate. NEVER sign until the 24 hours is complete. Come on guys, you should know the general rules on signing things by now. If your signature is on there and you made a mistake on your log, they can ticket you. At least if you didn't sign yet, you have a defense, and if you're not an #######, the cop will probably just point out the mistake and tell you to fix it.
AModelCat Thanks this. -
This has been all about paper logs, but what about e-logs?
You can't 'sign' those.
That happens when you 'approve' your log entries.
I guess that should be done with the same guidelines.
But many don't, thinking that they can go back and edit certain entries if they run short of time.
I think that is why Swift made a new policy. You won't be dispatched on a new load if you haven't approved your logs as of 0001 that day. -

I guess if you actually have a form that's labeled pre-trip. I've seen one before... No idea where they got it, but it was sitting in my truck.
