It also puts a strain on the driveshaft if the truck putting you at risk of breaking a U-joint.

Had a trainer tell me you save you drive tires by dumping too.

Sorry to hijack this thread but would a sliding 5th be necessary for flatbed operations? Never swapping trailers.

    Thanks

I would think flatbeds have more erratic loads.

Running refer, I have not needed to slide my fifth wheel in two years now while balancing loads.

How do you dump the suspension on the tandems? I didn't know that was possible.

    Really?!

Every air ride trailer I have ever pulled had a valve to dump the air. Usually back by where you pull the pins to slide the tandems. I dump the air on the trailer everytime I load or unload to keep from over extending the bags. That and its nice not bouncing around in the truck everytime the forklift goes in and out of the trailer.

I dump the drives when I unhook the trailer and in un-plowed lots during the winter to aid in traction. Honestly I dont know how or if it works but old timers all ways told me it helps and I have never been stuck so I continue to do it.

This "trainer" needs to find a new line of work and quit poisoning rookies' minds with stupidity like that.

It only works with air suspension.

The main reason behind it is to prevent overextension of the air bags when the load is removed quickly, i.e. pulling out from under a trailer or lifting the load off a flatbed or something.

But as some of the folks in here have mentioned, you can use it give you an extra couple inches of clearance if needed, or to help raise a low trailer.
