I cannot tell you how many times I have dead headed out of Florida and Miami no less to another state because I refused to pull a load for 88 cents a mile. I asked the guy, "Did you wake up this morning and decide you were going to work for free today? How about 2 bucks a mile is more like it."

I agree with you there wheelbase. Another factor is supply and demand of drivers. The trucking school I attend advertises our country "needs" 80,000 new drivers each year. I just don't see it that way. The more drivers you have available and the more companies you have in competition with each other...it contributes to cheaper freight prices especially for dry van in certain areas even where rail isn't. When I drove for Schneider I found out they were receiving government grants for programs they got involved with...such as that sleep apnea study. Oh yes you can thank Schneider for that one.
I remember when I was a factor worker...jobs were a dime a dozen. If I wasn't happy where I was I could quit a job on Friday and find another one on Tuesday lol. Now-a-days, people are a dime a dozen. Driving jobs seem to be the same...the more drivers and companies there are to haul freight the cheaper the price. So very sad.
My son gets mad because owner operator don't strike. I tell him, they can't stop driving because they might lose their customers if they are regular and small trucking companies will snatch their business/load up in a heartbeat. Then what is the owner operator to do?

Completely agree with you, I think the main reason rates are down is that we have too many drivers on the road, most places they have 1 load for 1.5-2 trucks in the area, so I just don't get it how can they constantly complain about shortage of drivers,
