I wonder why the Americans never got into disc brakes.

If everything is working correctly and the brakes are adjusted correctly, I don't have a problem pulling 105K down to a stop in a hurry if I need to. The warping thing is the biggest issue with discs. It is a problem with cars and pickups and would be an even bigger problem on big trucks were there is alot more heat build up in the brakes.

But I am not a heavy brake user, jakes are my friend.

it is tipical opinion of man, who newer had truck with EBS and disk brakes... please exuse me!

You see problems of disk warping, but we operate trucks with disk brakes for ten years and usually overheated disk cracks, but EBS prevents brake thermal stress.

The biggest mechanical problems of disk brakes are caliper self ajusting mechanics (with screws and small chaine), that may stuck and caliper liner worn with rought roads (but now calipers are twice ligher early ones and no so damage with bad roads we had before).

Some Europeans thought Hitler and Mussolini were good, too....

All you have to do to get disc brakes is to buy a truck with them!

Well I log about 130K a year in trucks grossing anywere from 96,000 lbs to 106,000 lbs without disc brakes. I have yet to kill anyone or feel that I am in danger myself due to brake fade or failure.

So complain all you want about the brake setups here in the states. Learn to drive properly and it is not an issue.

I know this is an old tread but I got bored and needed some entertainment.

Anyway at the company I work we got to trucks left with drums. Okay they are 10-12 years old but brakes quite recently rebuilt. Ofcourse the trucks got Abs. Well well the reaction between drums and a smilar truck with discs is huge. Feels like minutes when you push the pedal. Not to talk when fully loaded with 60 000kg (132,277lbs if I converted it right) total weight the drums got no power at all.
Not that I use brakes, rolling out as much as possible, lifting of so the speed isn't so high when its time to stop.
For example the two last week I got 12% out roll and 27.6l/100km (~4000km) in consumption with about 17 ton load (convert if you feel the need) speed? at the limiter . With many hills out rolling can raise to nearly 30% but also the consumption rise then and ofcourse no breakes are used in hills. Been driving volvo the last weeks so just VEB and lower gear if needed or let say I-shift does the job been some easy weeks but that means you got more time to play to get the consumption lower.

Also asked the guys in the garage and the trailers go about 1 million km without even brake pads rebuilt. Trucks trucks I don't know.
