Where does I-68 in MD rank in steep grades?

Came through the 68 East last night. 79138 lbs from 79 via Charleston.. With liquid asphalt...79 clear till 68 than snow it was bout 2am..nerves were frazzled.. Not afraid to admit it...seems they were only salting up the grades..never saw one going down... Gonna try Penna turnpike next time...

 

Mountain climbing is part of my routine, Interstate and crappy two lane alike.

To me the most hair raising are things off the beaten path which are short, but occasionally completely unmarked and exceeding 10%. There was somewhere along the Ohio WV border that I got down to actual freaking 3rd gear and the truck was just groaning its way up. It was an automatic so I didn't end up in 3rd due to an error. But then I also don't hold the pedal to the floor trying to go 1mph faster, I keep it in the torque band.

 

I come out of the west and That grade almost killed me back in the 80's. I was driving a 3 axle single drop lowboy with a rented Ryder tractor. I was active duty Navy hauling a bull dozer TD-25. About the same as a cat D-8 and was taking it to Salt Lake. I had all the permits for each state so I know how heavy I was. A little over 105,000lbs. I made it down but it was a non-forgetting incident that will stay with me all my life. After I got down I kept it rolling but had to stop once I started to blow the old tires due to weight and the outside heat.

 

yeah, I've been going thru PA on 80 to 15 and running 83 on in to Bmore. little bit further, but much less stressful

 

I remember a 39% grade for just 3/4 mile more than any other out east.

They have the sign once you are dropping to hell.

Like have fun ###### trying to stop at that stop sign down there!!!!!

 

Thats not an optical illusion in the mirror. We don't wear no stinkn seat belt.
