You know where that big archway goes over 80 in western Nebraska? I was rolling along one morning, perfect day, not a cloud in the sky. 105000lbs, just cruising along. Had a Navajo pass me. I waved at him, he waved back. I flashed my lights. He started coming over and suddenly full brakes.

Dust and stuff start coming across the lane, and I see this truck had come from the westbound lane. He stopped in front of me. The driver looked at me like a deer in the headlights. I'm flat spotting tires. I stop a couple feet shy of his passenger door. The truck behind me does the rookie wiggle, nosedives and starts skidding. I close my eyes, relax, and go to my happy place...maybe if I don't tense up, I won't hurt my back. I open my eyes. He didn't hit me. Behind him, CRST hits his hazards, does the rookie wiggle, nosedives and comes to a stop.

"Oh my God...we might make it!"

    Werner didn't stop.

    KABOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

Werner cut his wheel left, and the right side of his truck hit the left corner of CRST's trailer. CRST had just picked up a load of Keystone. The trailer exploded and fired beer all over the place. Werners cab got ripped off.

The smoke and dust started to clear, and we finally got out of our trucks. The driver was still sitting behind the wheel, but when the top of the cab got ripped off, it scalped him. Driver was still holding the wheel skating. CRST's team mate was in the bunk. He got fired out the bunk and was injured.

There was another truck that came from westbound. He was sitting in the median small company, white truck, white box. A 4 wheeler was underneath the trailer. According to Navajo, the truck in the median had been sitting on the shoulder. The black truck that I almost hit was passing that 4wheeler. The white truck decided to make a U across the crossover from a dead stop on the shoulder. The 4 wheeler had nowhere to go but underneath the trailer. The black truck cut his wheel, still collided with the white truck, and then came completely across eastbound 80.

I tell you this: when things go to hell on the interstate it feels like it takes forever to get traffic stopped. Can you believe that no one got killed?

We cross the median quite regularly with ovesize loads in WY. Sometimes it's the only way to get from the south side of 80 to the north side or vice verse without running 60 or 80 miles up to a bridge that you can cross. We have permission from the state and get told when we call for permission to be safe and use our discretion whether or not troopers are needed.

I did belly out one time with a mud tank on a level deck stretch. I'm glad that time I had troopers as when I felt it dig in I floored it and spun tires on my tridrive and pulled it off the hump just as they got there with traffic.
