I've seen pictures like that a lot and I've never seen one snap off yet.
Met a gal who worked at a trailer manufacturer once, she told me that they make the kingpin by welding layers on layers and then have a portable machine they attach and it cuts it and shapes it in place.
Don't know for a fact but those things are really tough. Don't think I've ever seen or heard of a trailer being scrapped or worked on because of the kingpin.

 

On a positive note, think I may have just empted out at the nicest receiver I have been to in awhile. Tried to give me snack and drinks. Guess I shouldn't have judged them by their name. Sounded like a bar @MagnumaMoose collects his mail. Called Mr. Man Hole
