Where is everyone #5

The emergency phones are numbered and it goes down into the tenths ( or less ? I would need to look ) of a mile. Basically you drop the last two digits and there's your mile marker. They only did that to be messing with the Big Trucks is what I was told.

IIRC the telephones always have a zero in the last digit which makes it even trickier and it's not obvious. You really have to be on your toes to catch on to their little trick out there.

 

I had noticed they were numbered too. Never noticed how they were numbered though

 

Let's see 9/11/2001,

I got a call from a friend that said an airplane crashed into the World Trade Center. Went to the Hangar and watched the second airplane hit. We were in utter disbelief that this was happening. Jim and I were in Van Nuys the middle of the Valley with airports all around. We were in some of the most congested airspace in the country L.A. and there wasn't a thing aloft. Van Nuys airport is the largest general aviation airport on the west coast and is where private airplanes from Cessna's to 747's stay in Los Angeles. There was a local news crew at L.A. center the air traffic control center for the south west, usually there are hundreds of flights in the air at any time, the screens were blank.

Not only did I fly but my home was under the departure path of airplanes leaving LAX to the north west and, the arrivals to Burbank when they use Rwy8 most of the time. The silence was deafening.

The world changed that day, and for those of us that flew it changed profoundly.

Woke and turned on the TV in Escondido, CA. Thought it was a trailer for some new movie. I though wow! that’s some great graphics. Figured it was kind of a “War of the Worlds” hype? Didn’t pay much attention as it was on for background noise.

Hoped on my motorcycle and rode up to Riverside to my plant location. Finally realized once I got there that it was real.

Yes the silence was defining.

 

I had just finished loading a bunch of concrete forms to haul to a job in Grace Idaho. Shut all the jobs down for a couple days for everyone to regroup and I went to the MEPS station in Boise to see if I could join one of the construction battalions — got told I was to old — at 37!!

 

In all honesty part of me has regretted not joining the service. By the time I was old enough I was well over the weight requirements and never got my #### together to change it.

 

200 miles from the drop boys. Reloading tomorrow afternoon then little rock bound

 

Be a nice truck show up there this weekend if you're still around.

 

I was designing wheeled light armour at the GM Diesel plant in Ontario. CNN started talking about how the tower might fall down and I'm like "What a bunch of idiots. No way that fire will never get hot enough to weaken the steel that much, do they think the building wasn't designed to withstand a fire?".....and then of course we all watched as it came down straight enough to make a demolition crew proud. We couldn't believe what we just saw.

Then I said “This is our Pearl Harbor” and the lady beside me started to cry.

 

Before I forget, Thank you to all that serviced and gave. That's is something that will never be forgotten.
