Another point is to negotiate with your parts suppliers discount rates. Then have a 20% markup on parts. This way the customer gets parts for about what they would cost them anyhow. Plus a reasonable labor rate. Normally parts markup covers shops fixed costs. -

If I quit and started my own shop it would be 100 or 110/hr.
It depends how you charge as well. Some guys will bill for every minute on a job regardless of what happened. I would probably stay with the flat rate billing. One of our customers used to get a lot of work done at a small shop because it was only 90/hr. He started getting work done with us and it was cheaper. If the other shop only charges 90$/hr but takes 4 hours to do something we would only bill 2 at 150$ for, the higher $ per hour isn't really more.
It also depends how much demand there is and how many contacts you have. I know enough customers if I started a shop I could guarantee a full shop year round at 110$/hr. Around here if you are a mechanic with no work something is wrong. If you don't have many customers out of the gate, sometimes a lower $/hr will bring more in.
