Firing new motors takes me back to 13 and getting to play with first boobies. Nervous, excited, and not certain what they want.

Google "Environmental Protection Agency Engine Switching Fact Sheet"

If you dig into the various government rule books you might find it's illegal to put a older engine in a chassis. I'm not saying you will ever get caught or that the laws are the same everywhere but it's something to look into. Here in my part of Ontario if the emission tester was doing his job, he wouldn't even test the truck if he saw the engine was older than the chassis. I would also fail the emission test if the results were too high. Passing a bi-annual E-test is a requirement to renew the plates.

Pretty sure an older engine would be in violation of the Clean Air Act in NY also. I ran into those guys once on I-90 at Utica with my Pete. They did not care that I passed the e-test in my home province. He smoke tested my original equipment '86 3406B and failed me and wrote me a three digit ticket right there at the toll booth

Worth the risk to run paper? The answer might be yes for a fella that doesn't have to pass an E-test every other year to renew his plates.
