So, if I was to buy me a tool box, load it up with tools, and move north of the border... Who would stop me from wrenching on trucks? Finding work is never a problem... Talk to enough people, hand out enough business cards... Even someone that has never opened a hood, or laid under a truck, can find enough suckers, and can line up trucks around the block to work on. Whats the barrier? Who's going to stop me?

Nobody would hire you for starters and no major companies will hire you as a subcontractor either.

If you hang your own shingle, what prevents you from working on trucks or equipment or whatever? Is there something beyond buying a business license and forming a corporation?

No reason you can't do your own work. When it comes to repair for hire, as far as I know it becomes a liability issue. If you don't have a journeyman ticket, you aren't viewed as "qualified"

Guys like Pushbroom and myself have put 6,000 hours of on the job apprenticeship training and 1,000 hours of classroom schooling to earn that ticket. Customers pay for the knowledge that comes with that.
