The local apprenticeship board did a crackdown on businesses a few years back. I had to go home and bring copies of my trade certification to prove I was ok to hold the job I had. Guess a couple of businesses got busted with some unregistered apprentices. There's even a max ratio of apprentices to journeymen.
I see where you're coming from. A 7,000 hour commitment to the trade does weed a lot of the hacks out. The hacks that do make never amount to much more than filter spinners anyways.
I did some reading on ASE cert. and that really seems like a joke compared to what we need to go through. That 7,000 hours we put in takes about 4 years to complete. I've been at this for 7 years as a certified journeyman and I'm just starting to feel comfortable enough with my abilities to consider going out on my own.

That I'm not sure of. The provincial apprenticeship board keeps an eye on shops and such. They did a random audit of a shop I used to work at. They wanted to see everyone's apprenticeship cards or journeyman papers.1951 ford, Westbound23, cke and 15 others Thank this.

Stay at it, many of us on this forum appreciate and admire your work!!
I honestly have no clue what is required on the ASE training or certifications. I know back around 1981 GM sponsored a 8 section knowledge testing that 18,000 people took. Since dad worked for a GM & International dealership he was chosen to take the testing. Out of 18,000 he was in the top 10, not bad for a guy with a 9th grade education..... you talked to dad personally @shogun , probably didn’t seem like a Redneck flunky huh? LOL!!
Actually what you speak of @AModelCat is a good thing, we need more certified people with the know how to go along with it. As I say these words I think of this section from my union paper last week about skilled workers......
I keep hearing about a decline in trade school graduates, or should I say trade school entries....?1951 ford, Westbound23, cke and 19 others Thank this. -
Anyone in Ontario can open a shop without training. The business has to be licensed by the province. And then he would need to hire mechanics that were licensed to work on brakes and tires. Or he could just say we don't work on brakes or tires.
I have a shop. I could get it licensed and pay my Red Seal certified mechanic to work on other people stuff. If he left, I wouldn't be able to do that work becasue I am not certifiedLast edited: Nov 18, 2019

He could be a mechanic without any certs. Just couldn't legally work on brakes or tires. Do uncertified mechanics work on brakes and tires? Probably1951 ford, Westbound23, cke and 15 others Thank this.

Our mechanic never took a lick of training but he worked as a mechanic for decades. One day he contacted the Red Seal people and told them he wanted to "challenge the test". So he wrote the test and passed.1951 ford, Westbound23, cke and 18 others Thank this.

From what I remember the ASE cert is nothing more than bookwork. No actual skills testing involved just knowledge. You can be an ASE certified master tech and never turned a wrench if you're good at studying and problem solving. I always thought of it as a joke really.
Edit: turns out 2 years ojt is required to be certified. It may have been that way all along I'm not sure. Never cared enough to look that hard for the above reason1951 ford, Westbound23, cke and 11 others Thank this. -
