From what I know anyone could start and run a shop in Sask as a mechanic regardless of training. If you want to be safety certified and preform the 6 month inspections, you will have to have 1 qualified person. I think they have to be a journeyman to be safety qualified or minimum level 3. Then you will be subject to inspections from SGI (who issues the safety permit) to verify you are up to their standards and posses the necessary equipment.

We do hire some kids right out of high school and then pay them to go through tech. Its rare to find guys that don't have their papers yet as the base wage revolves around training. You will still get paid more for being a good tech, but not as much as someone who has been through training.
My work paid my tuition for each year of training and topped up my wage to 85% while I was in school.

But to be fair there are fewer and fewer mechanical engines still in service. I've heard of H-D shops that won't work on the old stuff because they don't have anybody trained which is understandable.

For those of you that are trying to learn.....

Lower left see where the liner turns black. This one was fairly easy to see but inspect the whole thing before ya start disturbing things.

Similar situation happened to me several years ago. I was employed by GM Canada and we got bought out by General Dynamics Land Systems. GD wanted to open a satellite plant in Anniston, AL. Some GM Canada employees were sent to Anniston to train the GD employees. We had to apply to the US govt to to get work visas for the GM Canada employees even if they were only training because training is still work. Getting the visas was no problem (provided there was no criminal history) because the GM Canada employees had knowledge of the vehicles that was unavailable anywhere else

During school we'd actually tear down engines, manual transmissions, Alison autos, diffs. Diagnose and test starter and charging issues. That kind of stuff. School had an air brake board they'd set up with a mock tractor trailer air system and have us diagnose bad valves and stuff like that.
