Farmers have to be checking their grain bins this year after most crops were harvested at a high moisture. I'm sure we're gonna hear more bins going bad and I hope everybody is careful.
We have cables in the bins that check moisture and temperature so we know if the grain is acting out of range. In the winter I like to run the fans to cool the grain which helps you store it longer and least chance for it to get moldy and hot.
We have a app on our phone where we can go online and check temperatures, relative humidity and moistures. Here is a pic of what I can look at. The values in the cables shown are the temps in this 62,000 bushel bin.
@old iron or @cke can probably relate but on calm, frosty mornings if you smell something musty and a roof top of a grain bin is dry and the rest are frost covers, you better be getting into action quick. We've had this happen on a couple smaller bins in the past but since we can monitor temps we haven't had any issues since.
Sunflowers, flax, and canola are another crop that will get hot in a bin real fast. I heard of story's where flames are coming out of a bin top filled with flax.
If ranchers bale hay too wet they can also spontaneous combust.Last edited: Jan 25, 2020
