Our 5EK is a 97 model. Ive been told the higher horsepower ones break more, I dunno. This one was rated for 475 but pulls like a 550.![]()

I’ve cracked one on a 237 Mack once. The mechanic showed me after he got it tore down. It had a crack you could barely see. I’ve never seen one snap completely in two like that.

My brother was driving it, was in a full pull going uphill. Said it made hell of a racket, but shut it down immediately.
What made me mad about the whole situation was it just had a six hole overhaul and bearing roll in before we bought it.singlescrewshaker, Slowpoke KW, cke and 6 others Thank this. -
Is magnafluxing ever done on big truck engines during rebuilds?singlescrewshaker, Slowpoke KW, cke and 4 others Thank this.

Yes, if it's out. You can sonic check for thickness too. This is how I know that any port work on the intake side of a 12.7l is No bueno! Most million mile cranks need straighted too and true up the upper and lower surface to square the block up. Now with the all the heat cycles its considered a seasoned block. 2 twice as good as a new one. But this is far and few that people spend that kind of money.
Edit, this is my personal opinion. That's all.singlescrewshaker, Slowpoke KW, cke and 7 others Thank this. -

I'm not sure, the rebuild was done at a local shop, not a CAT house. The previous owner paid for that. Maybe if it was done there it would of been checked?
It had the original crank damper on it so maybe that contributed to the crank letting go. I think they need to be replaced every 500,000 miles.singlescrewshaker, Slowpoke KW, cke and 5 others Thank this. -
Got good news today. Passed my two year treadmill stress test. I get to keep my fed med card another year.
Old Iron, wore out, singlescrewshaker and 15 others Thank this. -
Seems to me it should be standard procedure as a CYA if you’re going to tear your engine down to that point anyway. That sucks royally to rebuild an engine only to have the crank break shortly thereafter.singlescrewshaker, Slowpoke KW, cke and 6 others Thank this.

The previous owner was having problems with one hole and head gasket leaking. They ended up doing all six holes, bearings, and reman head. I think it was a quick fix so they could sell it.
It was a big setback for us. I had done so much work on the rest of the truck over the years that I just could not push it in the trees. We had it rebuilt and still runs strong to this day.singlescrewshaker, Slowpoke KW, cke and 7 others Thank this.
