Pulled into a gas station, where cars fit, and trucks don't. Probably made the same mistake made by a lot of other morons, realizing they're in trouble, and push harder, trying to escape.
So, new driver, what should you do when you realize you're in trouble?

--Don't panic & keep calm..
--Turn on 4 ways flashers..
--If you have rotating beacons, I'd turn those on as well..
--When safe jump out, & start figuring out a safe exit strategy..
--Go extremely slow if you have too..
--If you got into this predicament without bumping anything, you should be able to follow the same trajectory in reverse to get out of it..
--Screw the traffic around you.. This can be difficult at first. (Still is for me at times) I like to accomplish my job without impeding other motorists, but sometimes you've no other option..
If Swift'y there remembered he had 53' of wagon behind him, this gas pump accident probably wouldn't have happened. If looking in the mirror, seeing the trailer off track isn't going to clear the pump. All he had too do was back up, & take a wider turn around it. If not possible, back out slowly..
I have no formal training & have made my own way this far in trucking. Slow progress, asking questions. I'm always learning, & willing to listen.
More experienced hands will add too this, & I'll probably learn something new from your question..
If one of my ideas here is wrong, they will correct me.! LoL

Hell I always look in my mirrors to see if I’m gonna clear the pumps or not even when pulling through the fuel island made for trucks; I don’t have the compensation for off tracking down pat yet, but at least I’m good working with what I got and know what I have to do when I actually see what’s going on

I do too, but some places I deliver to require backing in off a 4 lane highway. Car dealers and beauty supply stores spring to mind.
-
Isn’t it your arse though if someone doesn’t stop and goes under your trailer? Like you say you have to for these locations, but it seems pretty dangerous and I’m glad I haven’t had to do this yet with my limited experiencecke, D.Tibbitt, singlescrewshaker and 1 other person Thank this.

I think it depends on your position at the time of impact. Once you’re set up and in position to do it, it now comes down to distracted driving on the idiot’s part.
That’s why once you have control of the lanes, you don’t give it up until you’re certain you can get into the parking lot. Sometimes that requires adding a few extra shifts to reverse to work the front end around to be able to see down both sides of the trailer.cke, clausland, singlescrewshaker and 4 others Thank this.
