A guy picking up a machine today had these beastly tires on his truck. Bet he never has to chain in mud! 41xUQbv63xL._AC_SY355_.jpg

Well that’s what quick method of discouraging me from doing something haha an older trucker told me he did his like that and I thought it might save me some time; also what @Tug Toy said about throwing the hook is spot on and there’s no way in hell I’d do that, unless the guy on the other side is an ####### of course, ####### fishin’

I’d probably swerve off the road from laughing if I seen a semi with some #### swampers on it

He had 12 of them on the drives. Probably a safe bet he spends more time lowbedding off road than he does on pavement.

I'd say the biggest gain is a pain in the hind end, & being razzed on the CB!! LoL

I came up out of a hotshot. So for me there actually is some gains when comparing those two. 48' vs 40' deck, right now I'll deck ~28,500lb, vs 18,000lb, better bunk than a backseat, more comfortable, fuel is about the same, eld exempt, no payments so I can sit around when rates suck.

Against a regular twin screw, there really isn't much. The one less axle to maintain, cheaper tolls, pretty good fuel economy for what it is, no 2290 right now, maneuvers pretty good..

Honestly, I think about adding a pusher, or a cutoff like Tug is about to do. I don't have the skills to do that kind of work, so I'm at the mercy of the shops around me. (Had a few mishaps ) No doubt I miss out on some good freight that's heavy, but lots of the stuff I run is oddball pick today drop tomorrow, a fall off piece that pays the same as the full truck that left yesterday. Maybe I've just been lucky to make it work..?

    :thumbup:Booyah!!
    Open deck brotherhood lives!!

Not this year, but in past when I have run shingles in the spring/summer mine stays on. Plus I would load and unload 2-3 times a day. Then hauling barrier wall hourly, they don't pay you to piss around. You throw the hook. However I agree, and when mine are not in use the winches come off too. Never had one come loose. But you must be diligent and still watch your empty trailer.

Years past running wrecker, I have seen them cause havoc. From ripping side rail off, to around driveshaft. One even came out of headache rack and got in to the yoke, it pulled the rack in a v trying to suck it between the frame rails.

Seen a hook knock a axle cap off, wrap around the wheels.

Same deal with tarps seting on the catwalk or nose of a flat bed. Had one rap a 48x8 tarp around the driveshaft and pull all electric lines and coolant lines out of the bunk of a brand new w900 plus brake chambers. I tried to cut it to tow. After 5 minutes with razor knife I broke it up. Towed from the rear and had a tractor come get it.

I still wonder how many time a 48' tarp will wrap around a driveshaft. Shop guy spent hours removing it.

I hear good things on the good years for over the road and fuel economy. To soft to haul heavy.

I have currently 703 Yokohamas and the wear like iron, decent fuel milage, ride OK. But you can't keep the rocks out of them. Crushed concrete is even worse. My lot is chrushed materials. Next set is back to Michelin or Bridgestone. I have never seen low tier tires pay off in my type of operation.

If I was a 5k a year farmer, I would buy the cheapest virgin I could get.
