Not with steamers. With soft shells you can eat the whole thing, but I don’t do those.
I ditch the gills and entrails, break it in half, break the legs, backfins and claws off and eat what I can out of those, then eat the meat inside the shell.
There’s a lot of picking involved with steamed crabs, but the experience is about more than just eating crabs. It’s also about the conversation.
