The Schneider way is for rookies who d/h so they won't high hook. Those of us that pull the same trailer all the time each have our own ways, but generally, you want to keep the grease on the 5th wheel, instead of hanging off the front of the trailer apron.
I would have refused to hook to that trailer in your position. If there is any gap between the king pin plate and the 5th wheel plate, it's a no go, period.
