The Gestapo are handing out fines for it and they're now talking about making it so you can't renew your license or registration if you don't pay it.

Having lived off grid solar and feeding a genset with petroleum in the dark of winter I can solidly say- IMO...
There's no such thing as a free lunch. No long term solution for our level of consumption. But nothing lasts forever anyway. Solar flares or pandemics or peasant revolts, the how probably doesn't matter. Eventually we're all screwed even if it's just the grim reaper LOL

 

NAPA, in the little baggies on the spinning rack with the other oddball stuff. Need a big rivet puller to use them, the little hand crimp style just don't cut it.
