@AModelCat , just got out of the gym. In the boxing/MMA wannabe section, there was an older gent, big old bull pounding the bags, 70’s, lots of power, but slow and not very mobile. The thing of interest is that most people, when they are throwing hands, lift their chin. This guy, while swinging, never lifted his chin once. It costs him mobility, but it makes him tougher to hurt. It’s actually rare to see someone do this.

My guess would be that doing the treadmill thing is “safe” in comparison. They don’t have to deal with the scary thing called the Unknown.cke, singlescrewshaker, jamespmack and 7 others Thank this.

Maybe those folks like to meet others at the gym too and socialize...
In Rio there are some exercising equipment on some public squares and definitely on the seashore by the beach so folks can exercise outdoors...
The public square near the apartment where I was had some equipment... not much but better than nothing...
And some for the kids too...
This other was next to the apartment I sold...

Yeah, never understood that either. It would be different if you had a treadmill at the house, because of convenience and all. However, to leave the house in search of a treadmill....that's a whole different story. I think for alotnof folks, it's a social thing. When I was a part time triathlete a long time ago, half the point for me was to get away from folk. I have since replaced that with my adventure bike. However, it serves the same purpose. Get away from people.
