Big adjustment for me. I've been riding an xl185 for 33 years.
The 2 fiddy is heavier, the big front wheel is awesome. But 1st gear is wayyy too tall.
We are heading to a better riding area, same place I posted pics of last year.
Around here its logging/gas roads and the odd cutline.
Son and I just got back from a 40 mile rip. Ended up in muskeg. Yuck.
I have no real riding buddies so I grew my own.
Daughter is on a quad this year. She broke her wrist 5 months ago. Should be easier. She's taking over my 185 next year, after a through restoration.
@Rocks , the bike is 43 years old. Only 1 year newer then the rider.

Sometimes I feel indestructible while plowing through stuff in my dozer. Any trace of that feeling was quickly humbled by the home of hornets I unknowingly demolished. I'm not sure how many found me in the cab to accomplish this, but I can tell you that one would have been plenty.

He didn't have the option of throwing the park lever while jumping out the door. RIP Marvin.

Same with my 450 way too tall 1st gear. I changed out the 14 tooth for a 13 and in the rear a 36 to a 38. Don't have to slip the clutch or stall everywhere in the tight stuff. The new 450s don't like to lug either, they'll stall right out on you

Consider a sprocket (and chain) change 5 more teeth in the rear OR 1 less in the front will lower 1st gear and will knock some off the top. If you talk to the dealer he can order what you want if it is not in stock.
That goes for slowing the 185 and giving it more hillclimbing and trials-like ability too.

Yeah not fun. Around 5 years ago I was mowing grass about a foot tall around the pond and hit an underground nest. I jumped off that ##### rolling in high gear, full out sprint tearing my clothes off in the process. Then downed a bunch of Benadryl hoping i wasn't going into anaphylactic shock after 15-20 stings Lol
