I'm over at mom's for supper last night, she's pretty much blind so listens to the radio a lot. She says she heard a news story that a load of onions costs $22k to move from Idaho to the east coast and farmers are leaving crops in the ground.
Fact or fake news?

 

Jan 11th, USDA reported rates, don't know about the other.

 

Dunno for sure. Last I heard from my onion growing friends it was $3.50 per mile to Hunts for yellow onions. That is not double over last year, but a third more.

Might not be too far off on the total cost. Most onion loads I've seen going to the east coast are grossing $8-9k, $10k if going to the island. So figure $9-12k just in transportation. Then you have warehousing, handling, whatever it costs to do the actual farming which is surely not cheap. Oh and if they want to ship them in a reefer, go ahead and add $3-4k.
