It’s funny, I didn’t give much thought about my appearance until I started riding motorcycle. Was out near ElPaso and stopped at a gas station. This pretty young woman started filling up her car. I went inside the c-store. When I came out, the pretty girl had her toddler son out to see me take off on the bike.

    He likes motorcycles?

    “He LOVES motorcycles!”

I sat the boy on my bike and had his mom take a picture. Then I had mom sit on my bike and I took her picture. When I joined the motorcycle club, another biker and I rewrote the bylaws to fix some issues in the club. Huge portion of the bylaws had to do with character and riding. Why? The club did some community stuff and charity drives. And the kids were watching. How can we behave like scum one moment and do anything worthwhile for the community? How can we do anything for the kids if we behaved like a SOB to the kid’s mom?

When I was a kid, I looked up to the truckers. I admired them. I wanted to be one of them. I was proud when I became one. Just because the industry is filled with effeminate crybabies with foul personalities doesn’t mean that I can be like them. You never know who’s watching.

If we ever are going to change the image of the industry back to something respectable first we have to start with ourselves and secondly we have to call out the bad actor’s. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen someone throwing trash out on the ground. I politely walk up and either pick it up or say “hey bud, you dropped this.” Or I will walk over and pick it up and carry it to the trash while they are watching. The shame and embarrassment leaves a big impression.

The only exception to this was in Baytown. I went over to do this and the ### hole had crapped in the bag. I came unglued. He was literally parked 100 feet from the fuel desk door.

I understand “have to” situations, but changing clothes on a dirty body is not my thing.

I grew up poor as a snake. Was only allowed in the tub every other day as a kid, and only allowed about 3” of water in the tub. Every other day was a bath in the sink out in the utility room. I grew up a lot different than most my age, never knew what a shower felt like till after I left home and started traveling.

After growing up, I always said I would never go around dirty like a homeless person. And I haven’t. My hands may be stained from pulling wrenches and trying to be a stand up citizen of society, but you’ll never see me going days on end without a bath.

Makes me wonder if the dude you seen was homeless, and could no longer stand himself…?
