When Armco steel was wide open years ago I was with Machinery Hauling. (1980’s). Armco in Middletown, Ohio was the “mother plant” to us, and Armco in Ashland, KY was smaller. They had so many coils in Middletown there was not enough roof space for all of them apparently.

I’ve had quite a few 30,000 + lbs single coils set on me in Middletown by a fork truck, but I’ve pulled singles @ 48,000 out of there too…. with 6 chains.

Pop had 3/4” thick plate welded on top the frame rails of our spread axle trailers just in front of the front axle. Spread on spring not air lol, never had air till in the 90’s.

Most of us ran route 32 east out of Cinncinatti over to 104 and down to 23 in Kentucky. Some of us ran route 73 through the woods from 32 over to 104 too. Talk about a interesting road…. look down the side of the trailer through the mirror, and it looked like a snake crawling from the side to side flex in them old 40,42,&45 foot trailers we had.

One of my favorite trucks that Pop owned was his 1975 359 Peterbilt day cab. 2 tone blue. 290 Cummins / 13 spd / big white steering wheel with Armstrong steering and no a/c.

Sorry I got to rambling, really miss Pop and my other mentors at times….

 

You can keep that stuff right were it is lol, It’s cold enough here now….

 

Why TGIF? If you're next comment is it is the weekend, well I wasn't aware that we had weekends or holidays for that matter as adults or at least truckers anyhow

 

Amodel here has one of those thankless jobs of grease monkey..... almost bankers hours if you will.

There are a couple of videos on YouTube if you get bored. Not the same as watching it in real time, obviously, but still pretty cool. The whole jack assembly surrounds the tower and keeps it stable. They jack it and slide the next piece in and bolt it up. I was offered to learn to run one years ago and declined. I get my self in enough predicaments down here on solid ground I don’t need the added benefits of being 300’ in the air! not from a tower but the view from 252’ in a man basket. I’ll take a hard pass!!!
