If I remember correctly you get a company fuel card, who more than likely gets discounts at certain pumps, so the trick is to plan your fuel stops to get the cheapest fuel whether it’s the pump 20 miles down the road, or in another state, especially if it’s one like California...

There is going to be a number that is your minimum needed to simply keep the business operational. Break even point. You didn't lose any money, but didn't make any either. Use that number as a baseline for establishing what you feel you need to make to turn a profit. There isn't a one size fits all answer here because YOU need to determine what YOUR time is worth and how much you want to pay yourself as a wage.
Here's a picture off of DAT for you. Take a look at what's there and crunch some numbers and tell the class what you think is worth taking, and why.

I never try to talk anyone out of running their own show, or owning equipment. Understand not wanting to be told what to do, where to run, when to tarp, etc etc etc..

How long do you plan on being back in trucking.?
You said it's just a way for yourself to make enough money to put yourself through school to get a criminology degree..
Alot of times, especially when first get going it will be a couple 3yrs before one actually begins to turn profit. Add to that a huge truck note, & being at the mercy of expensive, slow, incompetent dealerships to service/repair your tractor, & only keeping 75% of gross revenue, in a volatile market.. (on the way down imo, with record expensive equipment)
I'm saying it will be difficult just to tread water, even harder while wearing cinder block boots.. You might make it like @D.Tibbitt did, but it may be 3-4yrs? before you have disposable income & time to spend on schooling..
What my convoluted unorganized ramblings is trying to convey,
If driving truck as an OO isn't the end goal, you will have the time & money for school much faster as a company guy..
I know most people despise a 1099 outfit, but I'm friends with a fella out of IL that runs one. Little 4 truck skateboard outfit, drivers make ~$2500 a week. Sure you have to take $500 a week & set aside for taxes, but in just a few months you'd have the money you need for school & move on with life..

Im Home. Was offered a 65,000lb load to Qc, deliver Monday, but the rate, to me, was crap, I'd rather sit home for the weekend than beat hell out of my truck for that. I have 435 hp, direct 10sp and 2:64 rears. Weight like that kills trucks like mine with the hills we have east here. I was hired to do US loads, US weights.
