Company I'm leased to has a fuel card with discounts at Peelot, and I have NATSC. When fuel was approaching $7 at the mega stops the discounts vanished for around a month. I mean gone. For a month it was cheaper to fill at the local gas stations. I used their "loyalty" card for 3 cents off, and my credit card that gives 3% cash back at gas stations.

I shop by lowest pre-tax price on my route/trip and it usually works itself out since I tend to fuel up here in Taxylvania on my way out. Company pays IFTA, but I always try to hit the end of the year +/-$200 since there's no provision in my lease for me to pay to extra or them to refund any excess, I just try to be as fair as possible.

Despite the fact that I like to track every cent, I actually don't penny pinch. I fuel where it makes sense, and I keep spreadsheets like this to keep my operational costs current. I haven't found an accurate way to track total expense day by day because I rarely expense out a maintenance repair and spread the depreciation out 3-5 years, so parts and supplies tickets tend to just get collected until end of year tax time. All I can do it look back on prior years expenses and adjust for fuel to get the most accurate operating cost.

^ This is very good and accurate advise. I was self-employed for 12 years prior to jumping back into trucking, and even with the wealth of information from Double Yellow's, Blair's and Tug's threads, it still took me 3 years to get myself pointed in the right direction. I do all of my own repairs and maintenance, started with a paid off tractor, a hefty safety cushion of cash, and a decent line of available credit and I've still had a few questionable periods along the way. There is NO get rich quick scheme that works. You won't "get rich" trucking, but if you do it correctly you CAN build wealth. From the outside, they both may look the same, but the guys that have built wealth trucking would probably never use the term that they got rich off it, and if they did, I'd have to question their real success.

The part that is confusing me. Is the used truck. Stevens Transport has brand new trucks you can lease purchase. Sure you can lease a used one. But why?

One of the guys I did my training with. Did the walk away lease on a brand new truck. Then flipped it to the lease purchase. That way he wasn't inheriting anyone else's problems.

Absolutely, plus concider what that education cost could rise in the next few years while your saving. Then your X amount of years further away from starting your goal career. What about wage lost in your desired career? Your still gonna start at the entry level when you get to it in x amount of years.

If trucking is your end game, go for it. If its not, I'd find a local gig that you can work stupid hours, and nose on the grindstone attending school at the same time. It will only take a few years and pay for your education as you go. Get into your desired field sooner.

Your not gonna truck hard and study hard. One or both with not get the needed attention.
