If you were inclined to get a Harley, I'd suggest taking the Harley-Davidson Riding Academy New Rider Course. The cost of the course can be used to put a down payment on a bike. Their trainers are top notch, and you will learn to ride, right.
Wife took it, she was complete newbie, I took it with her so she wouldn't feel alone, and I learned a few 'proper' things that I hadn't been doing right as well. It's grueling but they train you to use that clutch zone like Six says, so you can slow ride to a stop, never drop your feet and keep the bike level. They also drill it into your head to ride with your head on a swivel, because no one else is looking out for you, but I suspect most of use having been drivers know that already, but when on the bike, we don't have the luxury of a semi for protection.
If the cost is too high or you're not a Harley buyer, try a local college. They often offer the courses as well, and they are taught by equally qualified MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) certified instructors, and usually at a more reasonable cost than the Harley course, but of course, there's no option for the down payment either.![]()

Yeah, I was listening to that, too. One of my favorite things to do with the manuevers. Kept in practice, and one day when cleaning my bike, I sliced my finger on the sharpened chrome edge of the foot pad. Realized I was going to have to change it out before washing it again.

Yes, sir, that was one of the bad habits I had to lose, also when taking the course with the wife. That and keeping the last two fingers off the brake handle for going into that turn with dirt bikes.

Check out a guy on YouTube, Mike Festiva, and watch those for a while, especially his hints for new welders and such, and go from there. He reviews welders and shows extensive project that he does with the welding giving good hints as he goes along. You'll find yourself understanding that welding is both art and science, but you can do it with only trial and error art, if you have to. He makes you curious to learn more.

Not sure if it's the same everywhere, but my son and his wife took the Harley course on their Hondas a year or so after first starting to ride.
He took another from an independent police officer offering some weelend classes too. Said he learned a lot at both, and want's to do them again.
I plan on it somewhereLast edited: May 21, 2023

I still use my grandpa's old buzzbox most of the time. Bet it's 60 years old. I've seen used old ones 75-100$CAXPT, singlescrewshaker, cke and 3 others Thank this. -
That’s a definite along with plenty of good scrap steel, at least for the practice aspect.
I would add though that a point in the right direction does help a bit. Not everybody picks up vertical right off the bat. I still have trouble with it.CAXPT, singlescrewshaker, cke and 4 others Thank this. -
Glad your ok. But most likely they are gonna total it. Wouldn't bother to repair, but insurance most likely will not.CAXPT, singlescrewshaker, cke and 7 others Thank this. -
