From what I remember (thanks to Spike TV's Powerblock) they do that to eliminate the parisitic loss of the oil splashing against the rotating assembly. Plus they can get the engine to sit lower in the frame if needed because there is no longer a deep sump off the bottom of the oil pan.

    You assume correct.
When riding, it should always be in gear, even at stops, in case you have to make a quick move if someone is coming at you, just like in a truck rolling across train tracks. When you downshift, you just shift down constantly until you get to first. You only worry about the half click up from first when you're putting it in neutral. Keep the clutch disengaged until the little light (you should have one) indicating neutral comes on, then you can release the clutch. Sometimes it can be tricky getting it into Neutral especially with lots of use, so make sure you get it in neutral before releasing that clutch or you'll be lurched and possibly have the bike pull out from under you. :)

Whew! Loaded question. Ya don't ask a farmer how many acres he got...it's like how much is in YOUR bank account. None of em tell ya the truth anyway lol.
