I've used both styles, but the thermostat outlet always made the clamps bite into the hose on my truck too. Went with Gates PowerGrip clamps on every hose but the one on the bottom of my radiator (wasn't confident I could get to that one and get it shrunk correctly). Other than being kind of pain if you have to remove them (soldering iron works best), a year and half in and they're doing what they're supposed to do.

Get better and do what you need to do. As long as the heal goes well, you'll be able to do what you need to do after you regain your muscle tone.
