Question for you guys if ya got a second.

So I was overweight with a load of hay going to Wyoming. 83k and change. I remembered @Oxbow telling me some time back a guy could buy permits to cover it.

Anyway, no big deal. 40$, and the Wyoming scale guy said I would be good to 86k if I was registered for 86k instead of 80.

Since I run mostly west, can a guy register certain states at a higher GVW, and is the cost significant?

My registration has each state and province listed independently for weight.

    Thanks

Some states require you to register for either the max GVWR or at least your permit weight. Here's the chart of my registrations. These numbers are from back when I had my 11 axles setup.

Wyoming told me I was legal up to 117,000 on 6 axles with my jeep and booster stacked. Found out when I tried to buy a permit for 84K. Still needed one for the 9' width though.

Once you start playing the over 80K game in the west you have to deal with the different rules for each state, but raising you cab card weights is simple and relatively inexpensive. A word of caution though, I don't think you can bridge 86 - probably more around 84K depending on your axle spacing. Maybe I am wrong if he said you could go to 86, but I would check on it. I know Wyoming measures our spacings for our permits. Idaho you can run up to 129K with an annual excess weight permit for divisible loads, but only up to the legal axle/bridge weights. They do have a pretty cool spreadsheet set up to calculate what you can haul though. Let me know if you want it - I can email it to you.

I register at 86k in MT,ID,UT,OR and WA for a few hundred extra annually. I think UT and possibly WA are monthly permits where the others are good for the year. My wife knows for sure, I just drive where I'm told.

Registering for 86k means nothing if you can only scale 82k or 83k due to your bridge table(based on distances between axle groups) I've learned this the hard way!
