Amen. Putting them in jail is not working.

    Tall tree short rope?
    Firing squad?
And a Texas favorite, tied out over a fire ant hill nude.

A .308 round or two is the cheapest of those, but a rope is reusable. Decisions, decisions…

So I am guessing the news report went something like this

A man was taken into custody after a short chase by law enforcement officers. Fred Jones was reported in fair but stable condition after being arrested for vehicle theft. According to the report, Fred Jones attempted to flee the scene after getting the stolen vehicle stuck in snow. Officers reported the Mr. Jones fell several times trying to escape the scene, slipping in the snow. Mr. Jones was taken to a local hospital and treated for injuries sustained when he attempted his escape. The medical team stated that it would be a few days of recovery before he could be booked into jail.

This is Truckers Report version of "Am I the Jerk?

I allowed myself to be talked into hiring a brand new O/O by this kids father. Well he can't seem to grasp the fact when he is on one of my dedicated loads he has got to be on time and take care of our business. Nope, four times he has failed to leave the yard at all or on time, leaving someone else to cover the load. I told him and his father that if he was late again he would have to go somewhere else.

I have customers who go way back and they know I will take care of them and in turn I expect the wire transfer in 8 days. So there are strong long term relationships that have been built.

Thursday our mechanic shows up at 0500 while I am hooking up and putting a couple last items in my truck. I get out and ask him why he is here at the way early time for him? He said the kid hadn't started his truck anytime during the break. Great, I thought it won't start now.

We are standing there drinking coffee and shooting the breeze when my phone rings. It's the kid telling me that he is going to take more time off and just doesn't feel like running the dedicated. Oh, I reply. Hmm, tell you what, you have until noon to get your truck off of my property. At 12:01pm it will be towed off and you can go get it from the impound lot. And that you no longer work for me.

He is dumb founded. "What do you mean? I need to haul your freight!" Guess not I say, you can't show up on time nor take care of business. Come get your truck off of my property.
He has a long list of whines of where is he going to get loads, where can he park his truck.....etc. I tell him he should of thought of that earlier and hang up.

Here I am trying to cover this dedicated. I get it covered, but I am not happy.

His father calls and wants to know if I really fired his son. I reminded him of the conversation we had before the holiday break and that he had bailed on his run again today. His son failed to mention that.

So dad, who has been my friend for 30 plus years is mad at me, mad at his son and the kid thinks everyone owes him.

    Am I the jerk?

But they could not explain how he became covered in fire ants which took 8 hours to slowly remove from his body.

Depends on who you're asking it seems.

I spect you're in good company round here.

Like I always told my guys. I want solutions, not excuses. Handle business and everything will be fine.

    Some just can't handle it.

No, and his Dad will appreciate what you did soon enough if he has been a friend for that long. Hopefully the son will remember this lesson. By the sounds of the situation I would guess that the Dad has an interest in the boy's truck?

Yes he does. And if his son can't pay for something, dad "loans" him the money. I don't know if it is paid back or not, not my business.

I thought he was to young to be an O/O but no one asked me.

I wish he would sell it and team with his dad again, but that's not going to happen either.

    Darn kids.

This is why I hire retired guys. Less drama!
