I am going with a YES and NO answer.

The YES is you violated a number one rule. Business with Friends and Family.
This kid was part of a long term friend’s family. Never a good situation, dad probably knew he was a bit of a #$&@-up at some level. Now you’re in a bad situation with dad.

The NO is, you probably or should have made the job and it’s responsibility clear to this new operator.
If he didn’t understand what that was. Not your problem, it’s his problem for not comprehending what this was. If he had any questions, he should have asked them. His failure.

Nope! Not at all. Some people need a dose of reality. Maybe it'll be the wakeup call he needs to get his act together.

Not at all . There's to many drivers that do #### like that, then cry wolf when they aint get no work... it's like standing around the terminal as a company driver and a driver complaining there ain't no work, yet 30 seconds later they talk about all the #### they dont/wont do... as hard as this business is, let alone having your own customers, it takes 1 lazy/disrespectful mfer to ruin all the work u put in over the years...I'd a told that dude to kick it down the road as well, actually probably in a harsher way too . I got 0 patience for that ####

Many don’t respect the fine line between friendship and business and allow the line to be broken. Hopefully your friend of many years will think things through and respect your decision. If you don’t take care of your company, it won’t take care of you, he needs to understand that. And no, I don’t think you are the jerk, I think the son is…..

He would have made it farther if he had not turned up a dead end gravel road lol. The picture with the bubble gums was taken by my wife’s cousin, they caught him in her backyard lol. But yea, I hope they beat the living hell out of him! The person who owned the truck went back in the house to get their kid, imagine if a kid had been in the truck. Once the owner got the truck back he stated he found some lost dope, I guess it was overlooked since it was only reported as stolen. I hate a thief with a passion, that’s one sure fired way to piss me off….

Dude got exactly what he deserved. You gave him way more chances than most would have.

This seems to be a pretty common thing with newer O/O from comments I've heard in the past. "I'll just buy my own truck that way I can just take time off whenever I want!"

That's the way it would have been around here year's ago. Times have changed, sadly. I'm friends with some state troopers, one is a neighbor. Heard them telling a story a while back . A few troopers were walking a grassy shoulder looking for a gun that was thrown from a suspect's car in a chase. Search went on for a while in the hot sun , one of the troopers spoke up and said ,this is bs , twenty years ago we would have found as many guns as we needed by now.

IMHO a true and loyal friend would not only understand the situation @TX2Day was in with his customer, but do his level best to accomplish what he said he would do. Complications happen of course, but anything short of an honest effort is unacceptable.

I’m a man of my word, and I expect the same from others.
