I am going with a YES and NO answer.
The YES is you violated a number one rule. Business with Friends and Family.
This kid was part of a long term friend’s family. Never a good situation, dad probably knew he was a bit of a #$&@-up at some level. Now you’re in a bad situation with dad.
The NO is, you probably or should have made the job and it’s responsibility clear to this new operator.
If he didn’t understand what that was. Not your problem, it’s his problem for not comprehending what this was. If he had any questions, he should have asked them. His failure.
Where is everyone #5

Many don’t respect the fine line between friendship and business and allow the line to be broken. Hopefully your friend of many years will think things through and respect your decision. If you don’t take care of your company, it won’t take care of you, he needs to understand that. And no, I don’t think you are the jerk, I think the son is…..singlescrewshaker, sawmill, broke down plumber and 11 others Thank this. -
He would have made it farther if he had not turned up a dead end gravel road lol. The picture with the bubble gums was taken by my wife’s cousin, they caught him in her backyard lol. But yea, I hope they beat the living hell out of him! The person who owned the truck went back in the house to get their kid, imagine if a kid had been in the truck. Once the owner got the truck back he stated he found some lost dope, I guess it was overlooked since it was only reported as stolen. I hate a thief with a passion, that’s one sure fired way to piss me off….singlescrewshaker, broke down plumber, Feedman and 11 others Thank this. -
This seems to be a pretty common thing with newer O/O from comments I've heard in the past. "I'll just buy my own truck that way I can just take time off whenever I want!"singlescrewshaker, sawmill, broke down plumber and 13 others Thank this. -
