    I’ve only driven the electric ones. I feel sorta cheated now knowing there was a cable and even a vacuum option. I could get the electric ones singing so bad you had to stop.

    The 59 B170 I grew up with had an electric 2 speed. My 1961 B160 has an electric 2 spd as well….

    If it’s vacuum there will be a round diaphragm on the rear axle instead of an electric motor. Look like a small version of what you see on a gas meter at your home….

    I can't remember what it was in - maybe an International or a Dodge, no wait, I think it was a Chevy, anyway, it was just as you described in the top two.
    The 5x4 that I learned on was was kind of similar - hardly any difference between 5th direct and 4 over. The boss would tell me to alternate between the two to keep the heat down, which was silly because the 318 didn't hardly have enough power to stay in either very long.

    Ran a tall 427 5x2 progressive. 4-5-4hi-5hi. 90-100k gross as a kid. Really ran good. NOT fast, but sure did the job. I'd be a liar if I said I never missed one.

    Milton Baker from Oberlin Ohio, who is passed had a fleet of black C70 Chevys with aluminum spread axles. The man was a gentleman. Those little Chevys would put 60-70 payload on in Pittsburge, Cleveland get on the pike legal like. All diesels would leave them at the toll gate. About Sandusky/Oberlin they had them wound tight and came around you like a Nascar race. You wouldn't see them till Detroit next stop. Milton in later years admitted to running the tank behind the seat on some with hotter fuel. They would swing engines every 100k.

    Rumor was some had a tubular steer axle even. I never seen those. But a old wrecker hand knew they ran them.

    2am on the turnpike. You knew when they passed you.

    I was told it was a "short 5th" transmission.
    When I was 19 I did 3 months with a custom combining crew with 2 of them in Ford F750's and a L750 with twin sticks.

    Had to think a minute. Clark transmission. Clark 5 speed Standard, and progressive shift. Could be ordered either way.
